Ultra-fast internet for Mount Gambier

The South Australian Government will work to make Mount Gambier one of the first regional centres in South Australia to take advantage of its ultra-fast internet rollout.

A memorandum of understanding has been signed by the State Government, the University of South Australia and the City of Mount Gambier, with all parties agreeing to work together to expand the GigCity program to a new digital hub in Mount Gambier.

The government will work to extend internet services with speeds of at least one gigabit per second at affordable prices to eligible tenants – such as innovative start-up businesses – working in the hub.

The City of Mount Gambier’s digital strategy Building a Connected Regional City – A Digital Strategy and Action Plan includes recommendations to establish a digital hub facility in Mount Gambier.

Manufacturing and Innovation Minister Kyam Maher said regional South Australia is integral to the economic future of our state and we need our regions to prosper and be able to fully take advantage of the global move to technology intensive industries.

“I am delighted to announce that we are working with the University of South Australia and the City of Mount Gambier to bring this ultra-high speed internet to the South East, which will allow businesses to expand what they are doing and attract new businesses to the region.

“Our bold, new innovation initiatives are shaking things up – and this is vital if we are to compete on a global scale and take advantage of the technology around us.”

City of Mount Gambier Chief Executive Officer Mark McShane said the City of Mount Gambier’s participation in the GigCity project supports the implementation of Council’s newly released Digital Strategy that identifies the potential of the high speed optic fibre link, the need to capitalise and realise its potential to strengthen and diversify our economy.

“This high speed connectivity provides many opportunities and removes the barriers previously faced by regional cities being at some distance from capital cities and large markets.”

University of South Australia Regional Manager Ian McKay said the announcement of the expansion of the GigCity project to Mount Gambier is exciting news for business in the Mount Gambier and region.

“As Australia’s University of Enterprise, the University of South Australia is looking forward to partnering with the State Government and Mount Gambier City Council to assist this announcement become a reality.”
